Our 7th Annual FDA/Alzheimer’s Disease Allies Meeting for patient groups, regulators, researchers and industry will occur on November 6, 2014, from 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center (5701 Marinelli Rd., Bethesda, MD 20852). Held in partnership with the Society for Women’s Health Research, this meeting will explore challenges related to clinical meaningfulness in therapeutic development for early Alzheimer’s disease. APECS Study Seeks Participants

The APECS Study is a clinical research study evaluating an oral investigational medication that may help slow down the progression of what could be very early Alzheimer’s disease. By participating, patients may find out if their forgetfulness is due to very early Alzheimer’s disease; will have all study-related drugs and medical tests provided at no cost; will have their health monitored by a team of medical experts throughout the study; and will have the opportunity to help advance medical research for Alzheimer’s disease. To participate, patients must be between 50 and 85 years of age, have had memory problems for at least one year, and have someone in their life who can attend study visits with them and help them follow study requirements. Scientists Create ‘Alzheimer’s in a Dish’

For the first time, researchers created what they call Alzheimer’s in a Dish — a petri dish with human brain cells that develop the telltale structures of Alzheimer’s disease. This discovery surprised many experts and stands out as a tremendous step forward in AD research. The study was published in the journal Nature.

Registration Now Open for 2015 NIH Alzheimer’s Disease Research Summit

The National Institutes of Health has announced that registration is open for its Alzheimer’s Disease Research Summit 2015: Path to Treatment and Prevention. It will be held on February 9 and 10 in Bethesda, Md. Its central goal “is to continue the development of an integrated multidisciplinary research agenda necessary to address critical knowledge gaps and accelerate the discovery and delivery of effective treatments for Alzheimer’s patients at all stages of disease.” You can find out more info here.

Alzheimer’s May Erase Memories, But Emotions Often Remain, Finds Study

Researchers at the University of Iowa found that caregivers have a significant emotional influence on those with Alzheimer’s. Although they may not remember a specific action that is done to them, those with the disease can still have feelings of lasting impact about this action. MRI Technique Reveals Cognitive Decline before Symptoms Appear

A new study published in the journal Radiology revealed a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique called arterial spin labeling (ASL) imaging can detect cognitive decline even before the appearance of symptoms. This shows this could be used as a method to detect early signs of dementia. Read more here.

Researchers Use Large Data Collection to Find New Gene Linked to AD

Scientists utilized two of the world’s biggest collections of data to identify a novel gene that they linked to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. The identified gene is called MGST3. David Ashbrook, one of the researchers, noted, “Ultimately this could provide another biomarker in the toolkit for identifying those at greatest risk of developing diseases such as Alzheimer’s. The study has just been published in the journal BMC Genomics.
